Sometimes immunotherapy, which can include allergy shots or drops, is the best way to treat those with severe allergies. These medications can treat the roots causes of the allergy, not just the symptoms. They also have the benefit of helping your body lessen its reaction to the allergen, and less overall medication usually needs to be taken.

Allergy shots are usually administered in the doctor’s office, while allergy drops (sublingual immunotherapy, or SLIT) are a liquid you put under your tongue that you can take at home. Both are highly-tailored to a patient’s individual allergies, and the allergen itself is usually present in small doses in the medications. This helps the patient’s body acclimate itself to that specific cause.
